In this excursion I build an emergency shelter and slept between rocks in a sleeping bag.
I walked up in the mountains for a long time. Time was running out and I had to build a shelter between two large rocks.
I made a chicken soup for dinner and it was perfect for the cold weather!

Join us on our amazing adventure as we create the world's first Earthship inspired Holistic Homes-Greenhouse.

“You can not separate a tree from it roots, or it will die. So what happens when you separate all peoples from their roots…modern civilization."

Welcome to The Final Four Episodes, 1 of 4.
We don't know what day it is any more, but it doesn't really matter. :)
After 4 months we're back at and ready to finish off the Greenhouse just in time for spring.

After a few days of cleaning up and getting organized we're ready to finish the front roof, and install the flashings and metal roofing while we wait for the ground to thaw enough to install the rest of the cooling tubes, the cistern, and make the plumbing connections.

With everything installed it's time to give this beauty some more shape by grading the front of the building down to the water and creating the berm around the rest of her and tucking her into the earth.

This build and these buildings are about more than just the structure we’re creating, as they affect the structure of your whole life. Generations should not be separated into different buildings all day every day, they should be together, and these buildings offer that life style.

Tiny Earthship Style Cabin Built with Recycled Tires & Green Roof KEEPER 26 Views • 3 years ago

This mini earthship-style cabin is built with recycled tires and glass bottles, cob, and a gorgeous green roof. It's a 1-room cabin so the bedroom, kitchen, and dining room are all in one open concept space. The bathroom is the only thing that is separate from the living area.

While this micro cabin design looks a lot like an earthship, the design does not include all 6 principles of an earthship, as outlined by Michael Reynolds: https://www.earthshipglobal.com/#

This cabin is indirectly powered with solar, it's built with reclaimed and natural materials, and it has a passive solar design. It does not collect rainwater, produce food or treat grey and black water.

We visited this green building during a recent trip to Portugal and were excited to see such a neat space surrounded by inspiring projects and other structures. It has a natural pool/pond, trails, a yurt, a straw bale home, a yoga studio, dogs, chickens, horses, and a cat, as well as extensive gardens and fruit trees. A beautiful permaculture space/eco-resort to visit for sure!

Homesteading Couple Hasn’t Bought Groceries in a Year of Self-Sufficient Living KEEPER 27 Views • 3 years ago

Chris and Stef jumped into self-sufficiency last year when they decided not to buy groceries for an entire year, including staples like salt, sugar, coffee, and flour! Instead, they've been growing, catching, raising, and harvesting 100% of their food supply on a small 1/2 acre homestead. They're only a few weeks away from completing their year-long homestead challenge and they attribute their success to hard work and to the fact that they live in the Southern Gulf Islands where they have a great growing climate and access to the ocean.

The couple's four main sources of food have been:
CATCH - they catch fish, prawns, and other seafood from the ocean
GROW - they grow loads of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices on their land
HARVEST - they forage for things like mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seaweed
RAISE - they raise laying hens, chickens, and turkeys for eggs and meat

Eating only what they produce has drastically reduced the amount of money that Chris and Stef spend on groceries (they still buy hygiene products and other items that are not food and beverages) but a lot of the savings went directly towards building infrastructures like fencing and the chicken coop.

Another advantage of living off the land and sea like this is that they have noticed a huge reduction in the amount of household waste they're throwing out. Food from the garden doesn't come in a package!

It was inspiring to meet these two and see all the work they've put into learning and working towards their goal of becoming more self-sufficient with their food production.
