In 1962 voerde Stanley Milgram dit wereldberoemde experiment uit om aan te tonen dat mensen door het ‘Befehl ist Befehl’-principe in staat zijn tot gruwelijke daden. Proefpersonen moesten steeds sterkere elektrische schokken toedienen bij een ‘leerling met hartklachten’ (in het echt een acteur met geluidsopname), wanneer deze een fout maakte. De overgrote meerderheid van deze proefpersonen bleef elektrische schokken toedienen op bevel van de ‘onderzoeker’, ook als de ‘leerling’ smeekte om op te houden en hij daarna niet meer reageerde. Met dit experiment liet Stanley Milgram zien dat mensen geneigd zijn autoriteiten te gehoorzamen, ook als dat betekende dat hun normen werden overschreden. Zij voelden zich minder snel verantwoordelijk voor hun gedrag als dat in opdracht gedaan werd van een autoriteit. Dit experiment toont aan dat het Befehl ist Befehl-principe waarop de oorlogsmisdadigers van WO2 zich beriepen in het proces in Neurenberg niet zomaar uit de lucht kwam vallen.
