Former Army tech Larry Johnson has spent his career improving computer and telephone systems so when he saw inefficiencies in how we grow our food, he decided to create a new system for farming your yard. His EZGro garden uses aquaponics, stacked towers, and custom pots to create a high-density vertical garden (HDVG) on as little land as a deck, rooftop, or parking space.
Johnson says the system will grow 700 plants, using 15 towers, in a space of just 2 by 18 feet. Today, he sells kits ranging from single tower patio gardens to 10-tower deck gardens to commercial-sized set-ups like those being used by a Miami football stadium for concession meals, by a Whole Foods Market in New Jersey, and by rooftop farmers in Lagos, Nigeria.
It all began in 1995 when Johnson began tinkering with his quad pot design, crafting a custom container strong enough to hold tomato plants with over 100 pounds of fruit. He then developed an irrigation system that feeds nutrient-rich water from the top of the towers, drips through the pots, and filters out through tubing below to be reused. This closed-loop system uses less than 10% of the water of a traditional garden.
To create a system robust enough for even off-grid farmers, Johnson has spent the last 2 decades developing his trihelix solar windmill. Solar panels are mounted on top of three turbines, known as the "Tri-Helix", which are twisted like DNA strands to catch even inconsistent wind (turbines start turning in winds of just 2mph).

After filming this video I realized that the plastic bottles I used for several of my designs had become quite brittle, and found research showing that hydroxide solutions are known to be quite damaging to plastics: https://www.sciencedirect.com/....topics/chemistry/env
I did not notice increased brittleness in the clear plastic container of my final split electrolysis design, but the plastic is much thicker and so it may take longer to show weakness. A suitable precaution to give the cell the longest life may be to empty it of electrolyte while in storage. A stainless steel or glass container should be able to store the hydroxide solution indefinitely.

I've been living off the grid for a few years now, using a converted water powered F&P washing machine motor to generate more than enough power to run all the appliances & hot water I use in my house, as well as powering all the tools I use in my workshop. I'm told Whirpool Cabrio and Maytag Bravos use the same type of stator motor for those who can't find this model.
This off-grid hydro power system has a major problem; too much power. Jeff has stumbled upon a small clan of off-grid homeschoolers and discovers that their power system is a major source of angst.
Their stream engine produces around 1200-1300 Watts continuously and their load controller must get rid of any excess power by dumping the power into a hot water tank. Image the struggle to use copious amounts of hot water!
I travel to a summer home in the mountains of Western North Carolina to meet Bill. He has come up with a way to pull a lot of water over a dam and into a permanent magnet alternator. He feeds the power to the house to supplement what is used. Bill is using Langston Alternative Power for his setup and makes around 500 watts.

The interesting thing about this micro hydro setup is the way that the system is started. There is a lot of water that needs to flow over a dam. To get this system going Bill uses a simple shop vac to pull the water over into the 6" pipe.

It's a story from last year in Texas where the rights of a father named Jeffrey Younger to prevent his mother from putting their 8-year-old son James on puberty blockers and eventually estrogen to turn him into a girl named Luna. I guess we need to look on the bright side. At least Jeffrey can walk Luna down the aisle on day. Ironically Anne isn't even the biological mother of James soon to be Luna. She used in-vitro fertilization with a donor egg. So Jeffrey is fighting for a kid that isn't even his. His mother Anne was putting him in dresses at the age of 3 and painting his fingernails. Anne even confused him by telling him that he was a girl at the age of 3. She didn't let him choose his gender like so many leftists advocate. Instead she imposed the gender of her choosing on him and messed up his self identity. In this case we most likely know why James wants to be Luna. Because his mother validates him as a girl and wants him to be one. It's not exactly genuine gender dysphoria. But what are some other reasons why this trans trend keeps gaining more and more monentum and why the gonads are going to disappear more and more in our soyciety? I'll discuss the various reasons and what can be done about it in just a moment but let me first tell everyone about today's sponsor Aaron Clarey: Anyways, now back to the twig and no berries show. I'm predicting that in the next few years were going to see tons of people that have transitioned and worked hard so they can appear to pass for the opposite sex in public begin to detransition. So basically a gay guy named Aaron with two A's approached another dude named Jared before transitioning and Jared wasn't interested. So Erin, now spelled E R I N transitioned and passed for a female and as a result they fell in love got engaged. Is this strictly a case of gender dysphoria or does this mean there are gay dudes out there transitioning so they can attract straight men? And if you think that dating or being with a former male on female hormones and feminine appearance is better than being with a bio woman just look at the eyes of pain on Jared's face. It's the same eyes men get when they are with a woman that has a cooch. But in this case he sucks on a shwing shwang and he's just as unhappy. So what other reasons are there to transition. It can be a cry for attention in a world where attention is getting harder to get.

Mark and Chera rescued and renovated an old cabin and transformed it into an epic off-grid home for their family of 5. The catch? There's no road to get there, so they had to figure out how to do absolutely everything by boat and barge: transporting building materials, equipment, belongings, workers, as well as commuting to and from town for school and work.
They were limited in how much they could modify the existing cabin, so to make space for the kids' bedrooms, they attached a yurt to the house with a mudroom. For heat, they have a wood stove in the house, a pellet stove in the yurt (to keep a constant temperature for the kids), and backup wall-mount propane heaters for really cold days, or times when they're away from the house during winter (to prevent pipes from freezing). Since propane has to be delivered on a barge, it's really expensive so they try to limit their propane use as much as possible.
For electricity, they have 3 systems. First, a solar power system with 18 panels and a large battery bank which works great in the summer even though they're surrounded by mountains. But during the colder, rainier months, the system doesn't keep everything running so they installed a hydro turbine which creates electricity using water pressure from a creek up the hill, and this provides 24 hour electricity for most of the year. As a backup to these two systems, they have a propane generator but they try not to use it unless they need to.
The kids still attend school in town, and Mark and Chera have flexible jobs so they can work in town or from home as needed. They have 2 enclosed boats with GPS and heat for the 20 minute commute back and forth to town.
We loved getting the chance to spend a whole day and night with this lovely family and seeing how they've made off-grid living comfortable and fun for everyone!

Bryce and Misty have spent the last 12 years building a cob home, homesteading, living off the grid, and homeschooling their two daughters. They live without a car, so for transportation, they use taxis and bicycles, and they eventually hope to have a cart that their two horses can pull. For food production, they have a permaculture food forest for fruits and vegetables, chinampa-inspired wetland gardens, a cow and a bull for milk, ducks and chickens for eggs, bees for honey, and they also forage and cultivate feral crops.

These two have put in an impressive amount of work setting up their homestead. The house is built with clay that they collected from the wetland area of their property, their well was dug by hand, and everything from the fences to the staircase was made with wood from within a 20km radius of their home.
The cost to build the house was approximately $1,000 CAD. Most of the building materials (the sand, clay, straw, and wood) came from the land, and things like roofing, lumber, and windows they sourced from secondhand and reclaimed sources. Interestingly, they used several different natural building techniques in the home with each new addition. They usually start with a timber frame, and they have used cob, straw bales and wattle and daub, to fill in the spaces between the beams. And they've also explored using green roofs and earth floors.
Since moving to the land, they had two lovely daughters that they homeschool using unschooling and life immersion methods. They learn about food production, natural building, nature, math, reading, and more!
To earn an income, they do a variety of odd jobs including catering, seasonal farm work, a roadside plant stand, and they also receive the childcare benefit that all families in their province receive. Their primary focus is not how to earn more money but rather how to spend less and have more time. They try to produce as much of what they need on the farm.
For electricity, they have solar panels on the roof and a wind turbine (currently non-operational), for water they have a hand-dug well and rainwater collection barrels, for heat they have wood stoves, they have two composting toilets, and a rocket stove to heat water for their bathtub.
