About Socrates:

Name: “Sock”- shorten childhood nickname for Socrates, which is my birth name that I later had changed due to societal and peer pressures. My parents first met during a literature course in college and fell in love reading a play by Socrates… somewhere they thought it would be terribly romantic if they got married and named their first son Socrates… They did and the rest is my history… …or so the story goes…

Six years ago I found the men’s community in the emerging blogosphere, in search of not only trying to save an unhealthy and failing relationship, but in desperate search to find myself and reconnect to a society of men where I had previously always excelled and realized myself. It was something that I had lost touch of and was dearly lacking. It was the first tangible step in changing my life by re-taking control and authorship of it.

I found and discovered many, many things in the community… about myself, my life, my ideals and my values. I found and made friendships that I hold dear to this day. It more than anything for me was a culture that fostered and nurtured acts of self discovery, analysis and ability to be naked and raw with my honesty, as expressed to myself and others. It was this support group with which you could honestly engage and receive feedback, which I found so critical to my personal development. It was and still is many, many things to me well beyond ‘The Game’.

Who am I? I’m honestly not sure. I can tell you I’m (currently) a 47 year old man, professional (Architect), keynote speaker at The 21 Convention, a man who is still trying to honor his inner child and balance the desires, ambitions and responsibilities of a grown man… to realize an idealized self… in that regard I’m a process, part of a journey of discovery… I am a son, a brother, a friend to many, an ass-hole to some, a lover to a few and a nameless face in a crowd all in one… I am a composition of the human kaleidoscope of being… unique and utterly common… yet distinctly a noble being.

His interest in exercise and biology led him into a career in medicine. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio and went on to train in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock where he served as Chief Resident.

From there, Dr. McGuff served as Faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff Emergency Physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital.

Throughout his career Dr. McGuff maintained his interest in high intensity exercise. Doug realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise in November, 1997. Over the past 13 years Dr. McGuff and his instructors have continued to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training clients at Ultimate Exercise.

In addition to his work at Ultimate Exercise, Dr. McGuff is a partner with Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians, P.A. Dr. McGuff Lives in Seneca, South Carolina with his wife of 25-years, and their Children Eric and Madeline.

I started training with gurus in the Pick Up community like Sinn and Captain Jack, I worked with Legends like Future and Shaft. Doug McGuff, MD became interested in exercise at the age of 15 when he first read Arthur Jones' Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. His interest in exercise and biology led him into a career in medicine. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio and went on to train in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock where he served as Chief Resident. From there, Dr. McGuff served as Faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff Emergency Physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital.

Throughout his career Dr. McGuff maintained his interest in high intensity exercise. Doug realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise in November, 1997. Six years ago I found the men’s community in the emerging blogosphere, in search of not only trying to save an unhealthy and failing relationship, but in desperate search to find myself and reconnect to a society of men where I had previously always excelled and realized myself. I can tell you I’m (currently) a 47 year old man, professional (Architect), keynote speaker at The 21 Convention, a man who is still trying to honor his inner child and balance the desires, ambitions and responsibilities of a grown man… to realize an idealized self… in that regard I’m a process, part of a journey of discovery… I am a son, a brother, a friend to many, an ass-hole to some, a lover to a few and a nameless face in a crowd all in one… I am a composition of the human kaleidoscope of being… unique and utterly common… yet distinctly a noble being.

About the speaker :

Doug McGuff, MD became interested in exercise at the age of 15 when he first read Arthur Jones' Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. His interest in exercise and biology led him into a career in medicine. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio and went on to train in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock where he served as Chief Resident.

From there, Dr. McGuff served as Faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff Emergency Physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital.

Throughout his career Dr. McGuff maintained his interest in high intensity exercise. Doug realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise in November, 1997. Over the past 13 years Dr. McGuff and his instructors have continued to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training clients at Ultimate Exercise.

In addition to his work at Ultimate Exercise, Dr. McGuff is a partner with Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians, P.A. Dr. McGuff Lives in Seneca, South Carolina with his wife of 25-years, and their Children Eric and Madeline.

Doug McGuff, MD became interested in exercise at the age of 15 when he first read Arthur Jones' Nautilus Training Bulletin No. 2. His interest in exercise and biology led him into a career in medicine. In 1989, he graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio and went on to train in Emergency Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock where he served as Chief Resident.

From there, Dr. McGuff served as Faculty in the Wright State University Emergency Medicine Residency and was a staff Emergency Physician at Wright-Patterson AFB Hospital.

Throughout his career Dr. McGuff maintained his interest in high intensity exercise. Doug realized a lifelong dream when he opened Ultimate Exercise in November, 1997. Over the past 13 years Dr. McGuff and his instructors have continued to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training clients at Ultimate Exercise.

My parents first met during a literature course in college and fell in love reading a play by Socrates… somewhere they thought it would be terribly romantic if they got married and named their first son Socrates… They did and the rest is my history… …or so the story goes…

Six years ago I found the men’s community in the emerging blogosphere, in search of not only trying to save an unhealthy and failing relationship, but in desperate search to find myself and reconnect to a society of men where I had previously always excelled and realized myself. It was something that I had lost touch of and was dearly lacking. It was the first tangible step in changing my life by re-taking control and authorship of it.

I found and discovered many, many things in the community… about myself, my life, my ideals and my values. I found and made friendships that I hold dear to this day. It more than anything for me was a culture that fostered and nurtured acts of self discovery, analysis and ability to be naked and raw with my honesty, as expressed to myself and others. It was this support group with which you could honestly engage and receive feedback, which I found so critical to my personal development. It was and still is many, many things to me well beyond ‘The Game’.

Who am I? I’m honestly not sure. I can tell you I’m (currently) a 47 year old man, professional (Architect), keynote speaker at The 21 Convention, a man who is still trying to honor his inner child and balance the desires, ambitions and responsibilities of a grown man… to realize an idealized self… in that regard I’m a process, part of a journey of discovery… I am a son, a brother, a friend to many, an ass-hole to some, a lover to a few and a nameless face in a crowd all in one… I am a composition of the human kaleidoscope of being… unique and utterly common… yet distinctly a noble being.

In addition to his academic qualification James has gained extensive applied experience working as a strength and conditioning provider with a wide range of elite athletic populations including; international Ironman triathlete’s, Paralympic wheelchair basketball and rugby, semi-professional muay thai fighters, University American football and professional soccer. In addition he has worked with non-athletic populations including the elderly, diseased, and a population that he continues to conduct research with; sufferers of chronic low back pain.

James has also authored several peer reviewed papers on resistance training, low back pain and the scientific method and continues to prepare research outputs with many more in the pipeline from his PhD research and post-doctoral research plans.
