On American Uber Engineer Suicide Case

Recently, there was a case of a Uber engineer killing himself. Here is part of what happened, if you're not aware of the news:

"SAN FRANCISCO - Last April, Joseph Thomas, a 33-year-old self-taught African-American computer engineer, turned down a job at Apple in order to work for Uber. Five months later, he had killed himself, leaving a trail of questions about whether the company's fierce work culture was to blame.

Thomas had left his previous employer LinkedIn, lured by a great salary, Uber's reputation for smart engineers, and the potential for future wealth. The $170,000-a-year job already allowed for the purchase of a "dream house" for his childhood sweetheart and wife, Zecole, and the couple's two young boys.

In August, Zecole found Thomas dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tragic outcome, first reported in the San Francisco Chronicle Tuesday, has led to a lawsuit: His widow contends Uber's intense work culture was at fault.

"Uber's culture was different," Zecole Thomas told USA TODAY. "Here was a man who was very good at what he did, who took care of his family. But within months, he started to tell me that he ruined our life. That he was broken."

Provide a solid foundation of libraries and tools
A programming language is nothing without its core libraries and tools. Dart's have been powering very large apps for years now.

Make common programming tasks easy
Application programming comes with a set of common problems and common errors. Dart is designed to make those problems easier to tackle, and errors easier to catch. This is why we have async/await, generators, string interpolation, earlier error detection and much more.

Don't surprise the programmer
There should be a direct correspondence between what you type and what's going to happen. Magic (automatic type coercion, hoisting, "helper" globals, …) doesn't mix well with large apps.

Be the stable, pragmatic solution for real apps
Dart might seem boring to some. We prefer the terms productive and stable. We work closely with our core customers-the developers who build large applications with Dart-to make sure we're here for the long run."

Python is a widely used high-level programming language for general-purpose programming.

Its high-level built in data structures, combined with dynamic typing and dynamic binding, make it very attractive for Rapid Application Development, as well as for use as a scripting or glue language to connect existing components together. Python's simple, easy to learn syntax emphasizes readability and therefore reduces the cost of program maintenance. Python supports modules and packages, which encourages program modularity and code reuse. The Python interpreter and the extensive standard library are available in source or binary form without charge for all major platforms, and can be freely distributed.

Often, programmers fall in love with Python because of the increased productivity it provides. Since there is no compilation step, the edit-test-debug cycle is incredibly fast. Debugging Python programs is easy: a bug or bad input will never cause a segmentation fault. Instead, when the interpreter discovers an error, it raises an exception. When the program doesn't catch the exception, the interpreter prints a stack trace. A source level debugger allows inspection of local and global variables, evaluation of arbitrary expressions, setting breakpoints, stepping through the code a line at a time, and so on. I had the idea of reading this book and man... How energized and inspired I was after finishing it! It was completely awesome to see how good things can come if you trust the process.

A lot of developers ask me about "C" and "C++" and all of its possible variations.

The C Programming languages are known for all of its possible variations and for its complexity, making it kind of hard to learn.

Said that, you'll have to spend and invest some time if you really want to learn the C Programming Languages... However, is it really useful?

Recently, I did a video about programming algorithms and whether it was a good idea to learn it or not. I see a lot of programmers making much noise about programming algorithms and well... In the end, it might not be ALL OF THIS for you to worry about it so much.

I know this topic divides opinions on the internet. Some programmers might say that learning algorithms will definitely make your career stand out from the crowd, while others might say that you should not invest your time in learning algorithms because it is useless.

An algorithm is a self-contained step-by-step set of operations to be performed. Programming Algorithms perform calculation, data processing, and/or automated reasoning tasks.

"A programming algorithm is a set of instructions designed to perform a specific task. This can be a simple process, such as multiplying two numbers, or a complex operation, such as playing a compressed video file. Search engines use proprietary algorithms to display the most relevant results from their search index for specific queries.

In computer programming, algorithms are often created as functions. These functions serve as small programs that can be referenced by a larger program. For example, an image viewing application may include a library of functions that each use a custom algorithm to render different image file formats. An image editing program may contain algorithms designed to process image data. Examples of image processing algorithms include cropping, resizing, sharpening, blurring, red-eye reduction, and color enhancement."

A lot of you guys have been asking me this question. "John, can you tell us a little bit more about competitive programming? What is competitive programming? Is it a good choice?"

Well, the questions are endless. And I've decided to do a video talking more about this topic, trying to sum up everything in here.

So, first of all we need to understand what is competitive programming.

According to Wikipedia, "Competitive programming is a mind sport usually held over the Internet or a local network, involving participants trying to program according to provided specifications. Contestants are referred to as sport programmers. Competitive programming is recognized and supported by several multinational software and Internet companies, such as Google, Facebook and IBM. There are several organizations who host programming competitions on a regular basis.

A programming competition generally involves the host presenting a set of logical or mathematical problems to the contestants (who can vary in number from tens to several thousands), and contestants are required to write computer programs capable of solving each problem. Judging is based mostly upon number of problems solved and time spent for writing successful solutions, but may also include other factors (quality of output produced, execution time, program size, etc.)"

According to Statistic Times, when it comes to programming languages popularity, "Java is the most widely popular programming language in both Index (PYPL and TIOBE). Java has a 23.6 percent and 18.24 percent developer share in PYPL and TIOBE Index, respectively. Java is taking lead by 10.3 percent and 7.28 percent in PYPL and TIOBE Index, respectively in the global ranking. In India, Java is ahead by 6.5%. But in the US, Java is ahead by only 2.4%. Are MCSD Certifications A Good Option?

A lot of programmers ask me this question: Should I get MCSD certifications?

Well, to answer this question, first, we need to address what are MCSD and talk about if certifications are a good way to build a viable (and smart) career choice.

For those who don't know, "The Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer is Microsoft's prevailing certification for programmers and application developers. The MCSD covers current Visual Studio versions (for the MCSD: Application Lifecycle Management cert) and also emphasizes HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET, Azure, Web Services and SharePoint.

Within each credential you'll find various specialties that focus on specific job roles or target specific application types. There are a lot of options to choose from in this program, which currently includes five different MCSD credentials, including Windows Store Apps, Web Applications, SharePoint Applications, Azure Solutions Architect and Application Lifecycle Management.

Depending on the MCSD certification sought, candidates can expect to take three or four exams to obtain the credential. There are no required training courses, though all MCSD exams are associated with one or more Microsoft Official Curriculum course offerings. Look for online learning deals for the best bang for your buck.

Because of the MCSD: Windows Store App credential requires proficiency in a programming language (either HTML5 or C#), candidates who pass one of the associated programming exams earn a Microsoft Specialist certification in Visual Studio. The current programming exams are Programming in HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3 (exam number 480) and Programming in C# (exam number 483)."
