The squeal of the V Belts as a powerful motor spins a machine up to speed....

Where are the signs saying, "Caution - machine may start at any time"? Where are the lock out fences? Where is the operator only starting station controller - where he has to be away from the machine and pressing the start button - where it's then and only then, that the machine can start?

Fuck this.

Cutting corners on basic safety gets people killed.

I am not hysterically frightened, but I am very concerned about being anywhere around machines that can start up automatically - without any warning.

You know like UNPLUG the blender, before you go picking food out, that is stuck in a clump underneath the blades.

Or people starting up the car engine, without checking, while your hands are fucking around with the belts on the front of the motor...

Or people adjusting things on or around industrial robots, without full manual controls / safety interlocks / exclusion areas etc...

They frighten the shit out of me, because they are not so much, "fast" but they are quick, and it's the inertia of 250 Kg doing 30 Kmh when it hits you, and it pins you between it and the work piece... crushing you to death or ripping a huge piece out on the way through...

They are brilliant - but they creep me out.. lifeless things that come to life - and they move - whether your in the way or not...
