Mark is a structural engineer who works on alternative structures and is currently the caretaker of the Darfield Earthship in BC. He's been living there for nearly 2 years, and is also in the process of designing several Earthships so he is an incredible resource. We're grateful that we had a chance to spend an afternoon picking his brain about his experience living in an Earthship, and learning how they can perform in Canada's extreme climate (spoiler alert: it varies!).

If you'd like to get in touch with Mark or follow his work, you can find him online and on Instagram here:

Dang, if you have to load the Rocket Stove every 30 to 40 minutes, how do you get a good night's sleep???

That's a good point, however I think that it also has to deal with what is needed. Some people like temperatures to be in the 80s during winter, other people like me for example like to be slightly colder, to me perfect temperature is between 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 67 degrees Fahrenheit, which means my threshold is lower. Andy's house is roughly maintain this temperature at all times. But you're right it could be an issue. Most people who live in the Earth ships though, pretty much don't end up using there fireplace because the structure usually maintains the temperature is they like. I remember a video we're a dude in his Earthship said that he almost never uses his fireplace because it never gets that cold.

So obviously I think it comes down to what kind of climate you are in. And how you structure your house. To me personally the tires might be too much insulation which could cause too much heat throughout the night.
