Boy Oh Boy - I thought I was ignorant today, but I am 10 x as Ignorant as Yesterday.
The not so humble type writer, became a technological work of art...
These were rather incredible well before WW1 - and it makes the development of machine guns that are timed to fire through the gaps between the rotating propeller blade, rather simple actually.

The discussion here was fruitful and productive.

interesting, i would have designed it differently, if i had the same knowledge as i do currently...
course that is always easy to say, since we where not there and do not know what kind of education and knowledge was available and what kind of access the creators of these flying machines had to other designs...

It wasn't that hard, it was just the merging of 2 or 3 technologies and implementing the process and hard work to do it... Technically, all the cam shafts spin, to operate the intake and exhaust valves with great reliability and accurate timing.. and a machine gun, is a manually operated valve - that engages and disengages with the timing of the motor.... Most of this came because of the benefits of spying on the battle field, from aircraft, especially in using cameras, and also bombs, along with dirigibles (tethered spotter balloons) - so there needed to be air planes that were set up to shoot down the other planes, much better, than the pilots using shot guns and pistols... it wasn't exactly linear, as the use of machine guns was soon put into practice but the rear gunner, for self defence of some aircraft and the small magazines of the forward firing machine guns, without timing - up on the upper wing etc.. well a properly timed machine gun, that shot through the propellor, with bigger magazines belt feeding the ammunition to the gun, and all of that was inside the aircraft... There is an awful lot of smarts in the development of these weapons systems, more or less a combination of things, so they would have a stack of ammunition and would not be fucking around with small ammo boxes or drum magazines, while flying and getting shot at... from the ground and all around... And it all had to happen in a very short space of time... I think WW1 went from 1914 to 1918.. and the first aircraft were "quite an achievement" from the Wright Brothers efforts 10 years before hand... and within 4 years, EVERYTHING had changed so rapidly and the aircraft at the end of WW1 were incredibly better than the ones at the start... There is a video I saved on the development of the German aircraft industy from WW1 to present and they were going full on at it with aerospace institutes and wind tunnels and testing wings and propellors and aircraft designs etc..

In a sense - the development of standard timed machine guns, isn't that much different to the timing gear on a sewing machine... If you can do it, go to a Sewing Machine museum OR a big sewing machine repair place... that does domestic and industrial machines and have a look at what goes on there.... Fuck Me - it's REALLY incredible

@Councilof1: Any competent sewing machine mechanic and designer could make one, or a stamping mill designer, or a bottle filling station maker.... technically it's not much different to the speedo cable going to the needle and odometer. You just need a plain wooden disk on the front of the motor, and a few chalked in timing marks - you get it working, and then test it in service for reliability - jobs done.

well, the mechanizm to engage and disengage the machine guns would have been the hard part so as not to strip gears, the time would not be too hard itself because ones the engine is mounted and the timing gear for the machine guns is in place they just need to note the placement of the blades to gun trigger so the triggering was synced to rotation instead of guess work, all visual and no real need for calculation.

@sbseed: The Ancient Greeks, Persians, Wromans etc., all had gear operated firing mechanisims, on their Trimarines etc.. They could calculate the position of the sun and the moon, as to when the tide ws high or low for certain ports, and then row like mad into the enemies ships, ramming them, and sink them..
