Both countries were once occupied by the same former empire: The UK. Isn't Canada still a state under the Crown (UK)? Just asking for a friend (Popp/Blake).

@sauger1001: Yes. The governor general is the stand in for the Crown, ie the King of England. So many people think the PM is the head of state. Our senate is an even bigger joke. Hundreds of thousands of dollars for one day of work per year and it's a lifetime appointment that is almost impossible to lose. Most of our senators live in Mexico, the USA or the UK.
