Everytime you buy technology for a cheap price it's probably because some minerals have been extracted illegaly and sold illegaly for a cheap price to companies who sell those to the phone, computer, tech industry... Which means that if Congo is much bigger than in the school maps.. You can easily reach those numbers.. + Congo has a large population.. There are giant companies like Areva, Gecamine etc.. + the Chinese and other foreign companies.. If you add all those numbers together it matches... And I personally think that much more is extracted than we think.. The numbers they gave to the public are numbers they wan't to share with the public.. Kids(slave labor) cannot compete with heavy machinery (heavy machinery makes mining Cobalt is dirt cheap) , slaves need at least to eat, you cant even make food money, 2. it makes sense to use slave labor for gold /diamonds, and yes mercury is used in the purification of gold. 3 your argument that "Electronics is cheap because of slave labor" , no electronics contains a shitton of expensive rare earth minerals ,( Cobalt is not one of them)

Science and technology represents less than 15 % of the reason why companies can propose cheaper quality products ... The major reason why companies can propose cheap products with quality materials.. Is first because TONS and TONS of minerals are extracted illegaly and exported illegaly.. Same thing with legal extractions many quantities are exported illegaly.. The companies pay ridicule amounts of local taxes and they pay the corrupt officials in order to get the minerals out of there for cheap and without paying taxes.. Second thing : Companies buy from those illegal mines too.. The amount of such mines are increasing ! So the amount of minerals they can buy from there increases... Cobalt is one of the most extracted minerals, but there's Coltan too and many other minerals extracted.. In a mine you can also find sometimes more than one type of mineral..

If raw materials are only 2% of ticket value, and 98% is capital investment and salaries of (Western) scientists (around 140k a year for medior) designing the smartphones, then how is that 'exploitation to drive down cost' , (retorical question, because it isnt)
