100% Putin's fault. Early on, he should have been bombing all roads, railroads, bridges, and irregular crossings of the western Ukrainian border. Russia should have plugged up Ukraine so it couldn't get outside assistance from ZOG-E.U. and ZOG-U.S.
What kind of midget military mind thinks that a war can be fought entirely on the ground, by demoralized army, and the primary mode of action being done with artillery and little else? I don't care what Uncle Joe (Stalin) said about artillery! This is 2022; not 1941.
Closing up the border could have been done with Russia's old bombers and not risk the newer platforms. Run ground attack and Wild Weasel ops to expose Ukrainian AA sites and destroy them. Clear a path for Tu-95 bombers to make hundreds of sorties and dropping thousands of cheap free fall bombs on those border crossing. Thus creating a crater-pocked moonscape that would be very difficult to rebuild from. THEN come back and drop mines from the air into those bombed out areas.
Had Putin locked up Ukraine like that, he would've won the war by now and kept outsiders from sending in all these new weapons and supplies.
