Goddamn that's fantastic! I remember my first solo flight 32 years ago. I was in the Navy at the time and joined the Navy Flying Club so I could get my private pilot's license on the cheap. A retired Warrant Officer taught me and he was great. I got to fly all the usual beginner VFR planes that low-time pilots often flew.

My regular was the trusty Cessna 150 because it was CHEAP. On cross country trips, I'd rent the Piper Warrior. I flew a Cessna 182 twice with the owner. It's the kind of plane that doesn't like a light load. When it's loaded down is when it's happiest. Same thing with the 172. It's floaty when flying solo but, it doesn't have the power and constant speed prop of the 182. A Beech Sundowner was my favorite because of how wonderfully balanced it felt. But, the owner sold it and I only got to fly it a few times.

Eventually, after my active and follow-on reserve time was up, I had to pay the high rental rates like everybody else. I finally hung up my wings about 16 years ago because it was just too expensive and I couldn't justify it. I would probably be horrified at the new regs that have crept in over the years. It is pretty clear that TPTB don't want us Little People flying.
