I remember goths, emos, and scene kids from back in the day and pretty much all of them had a troubled background or instability of one form or another. People who engage in flamboyant behavior tend to be compensating from something, as cringe a term as that may be. I'm a self-rehabilitated hopeless romantic myself, so I know a lot about this on a personal level. The tragedy of people who are plagued by these traits is that the existence of them means you'll never find satisfaction or fulfillment.
