Not exactly sure what this is called in English, perhaps alternative history. When you get down to the roots, travel back in time. Usually the choices are made by one or two people which shift masses into a certain behavior. Some rulers back in the day chose Christianity over Islam, one the one hand the ruler could keep 300 women in a harem if he chose Islam, one the other he would be prohibited from drinking. Since he liked drinking more he chose Christianity and married off the 300 to his subordinates.
