Yesss Lets Do it. I like the idea of pressure / vaccum drives - where a large close fitting plate - around the train, and between the tunnel, exists and long pipe goes the full length of the tunnel, and it has a high pressure centrifical pump. If the train line is fairly flat, and closed at each end, then the air can be sucked out of one end creating a pressure drop of say 4 PSI / 26 Kpa in front of the plate / train, and it creates a pressure boose of say 6 PSI / 40Kpa behind the train / plate = a drive of about 10 PSI / or 66Kpa - So assuming that the diameter of the tunnel is say 8 meters or 26 feet, then it would be possible to drive trains through the tunnels, of appropriate lenghts and weights by gas drive alone. With wind turbines set up to generate large volumes of low pressure compressed air. With (144×26)×(144×26)×.78=10933678 square inches x 10 PSI total thrust = 109,336,780 = 100 million pounds of thrust. This is going to vary a bit with the train speed and the leakage around the plate and the gap between it and the tunnel.... And with the air pumps being reversable... it's a piece of piss really.

it's both cool and very scary especially with china.
