Someone in my server asked me to address John Rawl's thought experiment of the veil of ignorance, which is often used by proponents of herd morality to justify themselves. It SOUNDS good because it it makes logical sense in an idealistic world, but that's the problem isn't it? We don't live in an ideal world do we?

Just a thought: Perhaps the failure of this thought experiment is in the framing. By requiring the theoretical disembodied intelligence to focus on that which cannot be controlled by the individual (i.e. what kind of world do you want to live in?), it fails to ask the intelligence to focus on that which can be controlled (i.e. who am I? what do I want?).
Here is a modified thought experiment:
Imagine yourself to be a disembodied intelligence, not yet born, and have no idea what kind of world you will be born into. Now, further stipulate that you will be born human, and that all humans have certain common characteristics (i.e. bipedal, sexually dimorphic, large relative cranial capacity, etc.). However, you do not know to what level each of these common characteristics will manifest at birth (i.e. short v tall, male v female, moronic v genius, etc). What common characteristics would give yourself the greatest chance of success in life? How would you focus on these selected characteristics?
Admittedly it is rough... and I welcome a discussion.

Fuck a discussion, but I'll shoot the shit. Life is Self-Interest, and I want bitches with big titties to suck my dick DAILY. Clockwork nigga. But did I get that? NO. Now I'm salty. And so you know what, FUCK THIS WORLD NIIIIIIIGGA. But to answer your thingy-a-boo, the goal of life isn't to chase something, but it's to have fun with what you have. We all have internet, and there is a comment section here. Type yo shit if it's what you want, or wallow in What You Desire over What You Have like a bitch.

It is in my self interest to live in an advanced society. A meritocratic society appears to be the most effective way to create and sustain an advanced society. A society based upon the principle of equality is the opposite to a society based upon the principle of merit. So it is in my self interest to promote the concept of a merit based society even though this is the opposite of the current accepted societial paradigm.

Well you don't have that society, do you fuck boy. Now, you have 2 options. Wallow in What Could Be, or Embrace What Is. It's yo choice motherfucker, but adaptability isn't about adapting to the world, it's about using the world you have to best benefit your desires.

@FuckTurdFlingingMonkey: Adapting to circumstances is a given. Supporting merit based systems rather than equality based systems is a choice.

Life is unfair and idealism never survives full contact with reality. That's life.
