The evidence supports the claim that Chernobyl was sabotaged by foreign agents who managed to get hired on as plant operators and maintenance crew. Thus, the failure was one of security and not of the design itself or nuclear power in general.

I'm all for resurrecting nuclear power IF the NRC laid the Pimp Hand down on the corporations that would bid on such a project. I was in the U.S. Silent Service (nuclear submarines) and we proved that nuclear power can be safe and cost-effective. ALL of our problems with nuclear power are in civilian nuke power plants. Problems caused by corporate greed, management stupidity, and endless changes while the plant was being constructed. Thus, the failure of nuclear power was 100% red tape and not a fault of nuclear power itself.
The French did it right. Come up with one good design, stick to it, and make them all the same. In the U.S, every nuke plant is a one-of-a-kind boondoggle and full of modifications because that's how you squeeze more money out of the government, fatten corporate profits, and generate huge bonuses to the CEO and his cronies.
The NRC should develop this modular unit, get it right, and then tell the corporations that this is how it is to be built. Period. No gimmicks or mods to pad the cost.
