The airfield is located approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Staplehurst, about 38 miles SE of London. <br> <br>Built during 1943 as an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) for Operation Overlord (Normandy invasion), Staplehurst was used briefly by RAF fighter squadrons during August to October 1943 and then allocated to the US Ninth Air Force.
