I'll second TAOGYOW's comment. Make "you" your focus. The traditional model placed men in the role of protector and provider. And that was wholly appropriate...50,000 yeas ago when we were hunting Wooly Mammoths and living in caves. Things have changed a bit since then. Get your house in order, get your finances in order, pursure your goals and dreams, become the person you want to become. If you meet someone you want to bring along for the ride, that's your business. But you need to be #1, first and foremost. In so doing, it's tough love. Even if you want to fulfill a traditional role as provider and protector, you can't do it if you don't have your own shit squared away first. You need to be the highest priority if you're ever going to have reserves left over to give to someone else if that's the route you decide to take. They won't understand it, they won't see it, they'll call you selfish, emotionally unavailable, distant, etc. But you have to be that if you're ever going to have the strength and resources to make it through the world on your own.
