Just read the Gulag Archipelago and you will see, when the Commies take over, being in a remote community, living on your own with you and yours, being no thread to the system wont safe you. Read that book and you will see to what extend the system is going to weed out "destructive elements", even to the point of sending troops into the most remote places to crack down on little refugee groups living in total isolation. Thinking the government will leave you alone in your homestead because it would be too much hassle to go after you if you just quietly pay your taxes does not reflect what happens in reality.
