@ticklemyfirecracker: Australian federal income tax kicks in at $18,200 per annum at 19% then goes up in increments with people earning over $180,000.00 paying 45%. No state income tax. There is sales tax (GST) of 10%, but this doesn’t apply to a whole range of basic goods such as food. For the wealthy, it’s a similar situation to the USA, they mainly make their money in capitol gains which is not taxed until they realise the gains ie sell the shares, etc. and then they pay capitol gains tax on 50% only and will often shield even this by putting it into trusts, superannuation, etc. etc.
