Mmmm machine made? Not so much.

Life is about gathering the largest amount of resources possible (food, energy, time and shelter = offense) for the minimum of expenditure (time, energy, biological commitment = defense).

All the evolutionary adaptations to a steadily evolving environment - well the horseshoe crab had to evolve as a predator / scavenger to be as efficient as it could be under the circumstances and this is the design it came up with.

All the ones that were inefficient or too fast or too slow or too heavy or too light, or too weak or too strong - as these were all compromises, that had far reaching consequences, well they all evolved out of existence.
