The early web was nice because the people on it were a cut above. Now, because the rabble have gotten on and shit things up, paywalls are needed. But also, the need to paywall makes it possible to get paid for your work when you put up a cool service for like-minded people to use.

I think it's a good thing that paywalls are going up. People have been conditioned by big tech that online tech services are free. Paywalls are more effective than captchas and hashcash, which usually defeat automated access, because paywalls also filter out malicious humans, and don't create a cat-and-mouse game.
