No clutch. No brakes. And once his engine warmed up and he got a feel for the track, he started going for it.... They do lightly wet the track down to keep the dust down and to keep the surface sort of more solid... so depending how much they wet it and what the surface is like before and after, gives the amount of grip and slip feel to the track and different areas of the track... These are the sort of roads that I used to sit on 60 - 70 miles an hour, on a 6" wide strip, of clean damp clay / gravel mix, that was usually free of compression ripples, and pot holes etc.. But by sticking in that narrow strip and changing from side to side of the single lane road, to follow that strip - on a very light fast bike, you could cross hundreds of K's of mountain roads very quickly..... And the only difference between a flat track racing, is they had an oval with a flat fence around it, and I had trees and rock cliffs to run into on one side and a straight cliff to run off on the other side... And if you go sailing off the edge into slear space and down a 200 foot cliff - maybe a sharp eyed local will see the tyre marks through the gravel heading off the edge of the road... Maybe.... Of course, you might never be seen again.....
