i think the only things that are some good quality at the dollar store are things like gloves i have tried the ones that are made from that rough material, and the ones that have that blue goop for grip. and yeah i agree with you, most of the stuff at the dollar store for construction is almost always going to be trash and an waste of money.

just because something is cheaper doesn't mean it's better. sometimes you can get lucky, but an slightly more expensive tool is the better option.

i'm the same way with tech, you don't need the best of the best cell phone unless your work requires it, but for most folks, they don't need the most expensive phone out there, they need the moderately good phone that can still handle what they need it for but they also don't want to go too cheap either, when i purchase a phone i usually don't pay over $130 funny enough my favorite phone that i ever had was an 2017 budget phone that was only $90, and till this day it's the best phone i have ever had and i still use it for most everything, unfortunately i needed to turn off the service of that phone for something cheaper, i tried to use it with the new plan, but they required me to use another phone which sucked because that 2017 phone is way way better than the one i got for the new plan.

i also hate phones with built in batteries, because when the battery of the phone dies, it's not as simple as the ones where you just get an new battery and it works like new. phone companies do this for an reason, and that reason is so you go and purchase a new phone, they don't want you to keep your old phone and only replace the battery every few years because you only spend around $16 bucks for it and never have to spend much else on it again.

I say ditto to pretty much all of that. The middle of the road stuff is usually the best deals all around. I started to notice name brand stuff at my local Dollar Stores but they weren't there the next time I'd go. I figured out that the Dollar Stores are pseudo surplus stores for a lot of products - name brand stuff that was "end run" surplus or something similar. That, plus stuff that was obviously coming out of the same Chinese factory, just with a generic label. My philosophy is: if you frequent Dollar Stores for any reason, keep an eye out for surplus name brand stuff or generic labels that will still work.

@KEEPER: My favorite phone was an LG flip up that looked like a miniature laptop. Fulll QWERTY keyboard, screen and tiny speakers inside, old school phone buttons on outside. I dropped it countless times. The outside got beat up but the mini laptop looking inside stayed pristine. I miss that phone....
