I remember seeing shades of this phenomenon many years ago. The prospect of old people having no love or respect from their children.

Back in the day, pretty much everybody had grandparents who were still on the farm and still had good knowledge to learn from. They still had qualities worth respecting. They represented a living link to a better America.

As people moved off the farms and even out of the great industrial towns, the future old folks lost their contact with the things that we held in high regard. They began indulging themselves and acquiring no lovable qualities. They became modern. Instead of gaining value in old age, they simply got old and not worth caring about. As Baby Boomers and Gen X oxidize into old age, the ones who will take care of them will see nothing but a disreputable burden.

Woe unto us Baby Boomers. Blessed will be the ones who never had kids because, at least, we'll be able to prepare for our old age. We'll have to take care of ourselves and that will be better than being abandoned.
